About the track

Ellough Park near Beccles bills itself as East Anglia's premier outdoor kart circuit and has been running for over twenty years. It uses 390cc Sodi SR5 karts, the same machinery raced in the Sodi World Series, with an adjustable pedal system that alters both distance and height.

Booking more track time up front is worth doing here. A single 15-minute session is £32, which is £2.13 a minute. Three sessions are £67, which is £1.49 a minute, so 45 minutes costs barely twice what 15 does. Adding a session on the day is cheaper again at £22, or £17 after two.

The age split is worth understanding. Arrive and drive takes drivers from 8, provided they are at least 4ft 6in. Private events are 16 and over regardless of height, so a twelve-year-old can drive here but cannot join a Grand Prix.

Private events need groups of eight or more and come in three formats. Iron Man is a solo race against the clock, with 5 minutes of qualifying and a race of 30, 50, 75 or 100 minutes. Grand Prix runs practice, three heats and a 12-minute final with trophies. Endurance is for teams of two to five sharing a kart with mandatory pit stops, and needs 8 to 20 teams to run.

One practical note: hire sessions are never exclusive, so at busy times you may wait. A non-refundable £10 per person deposit secures a booking.

How young can children drive at Ellough Park?

Eight, in arrive and drive sessions, provided they are at least 4ft 6in tall. Private events such as Grand Prix and Endurance are 16 and over.

What does a session cost?
