About the track

Lydd Kart Circuit sits on Dengemarsh Road out on Romney Marsh in Kent, and runs two separate circuits with an unusually wide age spread between them.

The family circuit takes drivers from 6, provided they are already 6 rather than turning 6 that year, and at least 1 metre tall. That is the lowest height threshold we have recorded anywhere. Bambino karts run for 6 and 7 year olds, cadets from 8 to 11, and junior karts from 12 up. Adults join family sessions in the junior karts, so a parent can genuinely race their child rather than watch.

The senior circuit is the opposite end. Twin engine Prokarts, 17 and over, with ID checked on arrival. That 17 is the highest hire minimum in this directory, so a fifteen-year-old who drives adult karts elsewhere races on the family circuit here.

Every hire kart carries a remote safety system letting staff slow or stop a driver, which is worth knowing if you have a nervous child. Booking is by phone only, there is no online system, and a 50% deposit secures the slot. It is also a working Motorsport UK race circuit, with owner-driver practice every Friday and race meetings on the second Sunday of the month.

Which circuit can they drive?

Different circuits here take different ages, so the headline minimum isn't the whole story.

Family and junior circuit Bambino kart, 6 to 7 years · Cadet kart, 8 to 11 years · Junior kart, 12 and over, also used by adults in family sessions Maximum 10 to 12 karts on circuit depending on age. Adults join family sessions in junior karts, so a parent can race alongside their child. The senior twin-engine Prokarts never run here.

Racing your own kart

Mechanics and pushers must sign a circuit access form, wear hi-vis at all times and be 17 or over. Nobody under 16 may walk on the circuit. Drivers aged 17 and under need a parent or guardian to countersign.

Questions people ask

How young can children drive at Lydd?

Six, on the family circuit, provided they are already 6 years old rather than turning 6 that year, and at least 1 metre tall. Bambino karts run for 6 and 7 year olds.

Why is the adult circuit 17 and over?

The senior circuit uses twin engine Prokarts, which are considerably quicker than the junior karts, and the operator sets 17 as the minimum with ID checked on arrival. Anyone younger races on the family circuit instead.

Can parents race with their children?

Yes. Family sessions run on the junior circuit and adults use the junior karts, so everyone is on the same machinery. Up to 10 karts run at once.

What does a session cost?

Junior sessions run from £30 for 15 minutes to £90 for an hour. Senior sessions are £35 to £95 for the same durations. The longer sessions work out considerably cheaper per minute.

How do I book?

By phone only, on 01797 321747. There is no online booking, and a 50% deposit secures your session.

Which group events are exclusive?

Lydd45, Lydd60, Lydd90 and Lydd120 are exclusive to your booking. Lydd15 and Lydd30 are not, so other groups may be added to your session.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Karting normally runs in all weathers, but heavy rain, snow or ice can force a cancellation. The circuit contacts you to reschedule and refunds if you cannot. Cancelling yourself while the circuit is still running loses your deposit.

What should I wear?

Sensible clothing for the conditions and flat shoes or trainers. Heels and open-toed shoes are refused, and turning up in them may mean no karting. Race suits, helmets and gloves are provided.

Can I bring my own helmet?

Yes, if it is a full face crash helmet. Motocross helmets are not accepted here, which differs from several other circuits. Own suits are fine if clean and in good condition.

Is there a weight limit?

No upper limit. If you fit in the kart you can drive it, and the adult karts take up to XXXL and suit drivers from roughly 5ft. You are welcome to call in and sit in one before booking.

Can I practise with my own kart?

Yes. Practice runs every Friday for Cadet, Junior and Senior, plus the second Saturday before Race Sunday, which also opens to Bambinos. A full day is £65, or £60 for members, with half days and a £25 Bambino hour.

Can we stay overnight on race weekends?

Yes. Toilets are open on the Saturday night, though there are no showers and no electrical hook-up, and generators must be off by 10pm.
